13 March 1902 - The Clarence Sun

Frances E. Whitney was born in Sullivan county, New Hampshire, January 5, 1830, and died March 3, 1902, aged 72 years, one month and 28 days. She came west with her father's family and settled in Hale township, Jones county, Iowa, in the fall of 1853, and was united in marriage to Lorenzo D. Carlton on the 9th of April 1863. To this union was born two children, Effie S., who departed this life June 18, 1884, in the 20th year of her age; and Harry W. who, together with the husband survives to mourn her death. She united with the M.E. church when about seventeen years of age and has ever been a faithful and consistent member of the same.

Mrs. Carlton has been a long and patient sufferer, having been afflicted and on the point of death with that dread disease, consumption, for months past. But her sufferings are now ended, and she enjoys that peace of body and soul which those who lead lives of righteousness and morality are promised. She has been a most faithful wife and mother, and in the two years immediately succeeding her marriage when her husband was serving his country on the field of battle, she was battling against the cares of home. She has lived a righteous and upright life, and although her eyes are now closed to misery and mortality, they are opened in glory and immortality.

The funeral services were conducted from the M.E. church in Oxford Mills, Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. J. S. Westfall of Andrew, officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Oxford Junction.

To the sorrowing son and aged husband who are left to mourn her demise the community extends a sympathetic hand. But her life work is consoling, and she is now at rest and peace with her Master and Maker.
