DEATH OF A YOUNG MOTHER

HER DYING TESTIMONY-HOPKINS OF
MONTICELLO, the Father of Her Child

Some three weeks ago a young lady, 19 years old, the daughter of a poor but respectable parents, came to this city from Monticello and found lodging in a house on Clay Street. On Tuesday of last week she was confined, gave birth to a female child, which gives promise of living. The mother died last Sunday morning of puerperal fever, last while in consciousness, some ten hours before her death, she confessed before her attending physician a d a Notary Public, that one James Hopkins, of Castle Grove, Jones County, seduced her; that this man Hopkins was the only man who had ever had thus to do with her. Her ruin was accomplished, she alleged, while she was in the employ of a brother of her seducer. This man Hopkins, the father of her child, has since married.
The parents-mother and step-father of the girl-were ignorant of her condition until about two weeks ago. They were present at her funeral on Monday.

The deceased was a bright, amiable girl, and her statements receive fullest credit. But, who will take care of the child?
