A NEW ENGINE-We understand that anew locomotive is to be put on the Dubuque Southwestern in a couple of weeks, to be called the “Anamosa.” And just here let us enter a protest against the almost universal custom of murdering the name Anamosa. It is not pronounced Ana-mossa-as if the word were spelled with two instead of one “s,” and with the “o” short, as in “not.” Ana-mo-sa-mo as in “most”-is easier and far more euphonious, and with this pronunciation it is not so liable to be misspelled. Let railroad conductors and other employees, and especially our own citizens, remember that there is no such town Ana-moss-a in existence. Ana-mos-a was the name, years ago, of a very handsome Indian girl who came here and signifies “White Swan.”- There is something of poetic association and beauty in the name and so let it be pronounced correctly.
