Rev. Patrick J. Coffey

The appointment of the Rev. Patrick J. Coffey, pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley as rector of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque, was announced recently by the Most Rev. Archbishop Francis J. Beckman. Rev. Coffey succeeds Right Rev. Mons. J. J. Hanley, who died May 11th. Father Coffey will take over his new duties in the near future.

The new rector was born in Ireland. He received his college education at the Jesuit college in Limerick, Ireland, and studied theology at St. Patrick's Seminary, Carlow, Ireland. He was ordained in Ireland, June 4, 1898, coming to this country for service in the Dubuque diocese immediately thereafter.

Rev. Coffey's first assignment was assistant to Right Rev. Msgr. P. McLaughlin at Clinton. In 1902 he was appointed pastor at Temple Hill. Nine years later he was transferred to the pastorship of St. Patrick's church at North Garryowen, where he served until 1923. He had been pastor at Farley since that time. Father Coffey is one of the archdiocesan consultors, a member of the archdiocesan building committee and state chaplain of the Knights of Columbus.
