Susan Thalheimer Strauss, 93, passed peacefully with daughter, Joan by her side at Oaknoll Retirement Residence, Iowa City on May 10, 2023.

The family of Susan T. Strauss invites friends to a special remembrance on Thursday, June 15, 2023 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Heiden Room at Oaknoll, 1 Oaknoll Court in Iowa City.

Susan was born on June 13, 1929 to Richard and Edna May (Ross) Thalheimer of New Haven, CT. She attended the George School, New Town, PA and graduated from Hamden Hall Country Day School in Hamden, CT. She married John S. Strauss, MD on August 19, 1950 in Chicago, IL. Together they raised two daughters, Joan and Mary.

Susan was a travel agent; a career that served her well as she discovered places with her husband and family throughout the years. She supported her husband’s career advancement through hospitality and other activities for academic business and pleasure. Susan was surrounded by the arts growing up in New Haven and developed a real passion for theatre, music, dance performance and the visual arts.

When Susan and John moved to Iowa City in 1978, Susan believed at some point they would be returning to Boston. However, they quickly developed special friendships and connections throughout the University of Iowa and community. Iowa City became their home and Susan gave back to her community in a big way. Throughout the years, she enthusiastically supported Hancher programming and volunteered as a member of the Hancher Guild. She identified the need for the arts in her community and supported the Iowa City Jazz Festival through Summer of the Arts. She will always be remembered for her humor, her wit, her friendly smile and her generosity. She will certainly be missed.

Mrs. Strauss is survived by her daughter, Joan Strauss of Boston. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; daughter, Mary Strauss-Penka and her son-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Summer of the Arts www.summerofthearts.org/donate or mailed to 319 1st Street, Iowa City, IA 52240.
