Amy Pretorius, 40, of Iowa City, passed away June 15, 2022 at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from complications of a planned surgery on her own terms.

To honor the life of an exceptional woman, a memorial gathering for friends and family will be held on Wednesday June 22, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at The Celebration Farm, 4696 Robin Woods Ln NE, Iowa City, IA 52240, with a brief service to begin at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity's Women Build at https://build.iowavalleyhabitat.org/ or by sending donations to IVHFH at 2401 Scott Blvd. SE, Iowa City, IA 52240.

Amy was born September 14, 1981 in Davenport, Iowa to William Ganoe and Cyndi Olson. She grew up in Eldridge and attended North Scott High School and graduated from West Branch High School. She went on to obtain her BSN from The University of Iowa- College of Nursing. Amy worked as a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City before pursuing her passion for building and designing homes. She began working at the Peninsula Development Company, and the thrill of her job reassured her that a career in construction was what she was meant to do.

After dedicating 12-years at the Peninsula, Amy founded her own company, Elevation Homebuilders in 2017. The company’s success led them to winning several awards including the top three People’s Choice Award in the 2019 Greater Iowa City Area Parade of Homes, Remodelers Parade Awards in 2019 and 2020, and Builders’ Excellence Award in 2020.

Amy was active in her community and enjoyed sharing her passion of building homes with other women, encouraging them to pursue a career that makes them happy. She was a member of The Greater lowa City Area Home Builders Association, HBA Legislative Committee, HBA Women’s Council, Chair of the Iowa City Board of Adjustments, HOA President of the Peninsula Neighborhood Association and collaborator on the Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build 12 project.

Amy married her soulmate Adam Pretorius on August 14, 2010 and eventually gave birth to their energetic and adored son, William. Above all other roles Amy had, being a devoted mother to her son William was a role she took the most pride in. She enjoyed dressing up and going to dinner but was not afraid to skip the make-up and install a toilet, change the oil in her truck, or mow the lawn.

She is survived by her husband Adam Pretorius of Iowa City, IA and their son William; father William (Kathy) Ganoe of Eldridge, IA; mother Cindi (Eric) Olson of Iowa City, IA; sister and best friend Keri Ganoe (John Hogren) of Iowa City, IA; brother Bryan Doxsee (Megan Renison) of Lake Wood, CA; paternal grandparents Marilyn (Harvey) Ganoe of Jefferson, IA; and several extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Darlene and Roy Shotwell.

Living life without our Amy is devastating to comprehend and something that not even she could have prepared us for as she was always present in the lives of those she loved. To know Amy was to love Amy and that is why her light will continue to shine.

Memories and condolences may be shared with her family on the tribute wall.
