Honorable Carl D. Baker, 75, died peacefully at his home surrounding by his family following a courageous battle with cancer on Friday June 10th.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM Friday, June 24, 2022 at the Newman Center in Iowa City. The family will greet friends from 9:30 AM to 11 AM, prior to the service. Burial will be at a later date in Grimes, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa Bicycle Coalition (iowabicyclecoalition.org).

Carl was born September 18, 1946 in Des Moines, the son of Marcy and Mae (Allen) Baker. He was a graduate of Johnston High School. Carl received his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Iowa and in 1971 his Juris Doctorate from the University of Iowa College of Law.

On June 15, 1968 Carl married his high school sweetheart, Diane Lint.

They moved to Marshalltown in 1971 where Carl was in private practice. In 1981 he was appointed District Judge. He had a remarkable temperament, personality, and intellect that made him an outstanding attorney and District Judge.

Carl had a love of Iowa Hawkeye football, reading, biking, running, and music of all kinds. Carl was a wonderful example of someone with strength, compassion, and a unique and thoughtful dry sense of humor.

In 2011 Carl and Diane retired and moved back to Iowa City to be close to their children and grandchildren.

Carl is survived by his wife of 53 years, Diane and their two children, Ryan (Erin) Baker and Aimee (Baker) Underwood; grandsons, Colin and Brendan Baker and granddaughters, and Isabelle Hingtgen and Grayson Underwood; sisters, Debbie Baker and Kara (Rance) Knisley.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sandra (Don) Crowley.

Carl leaves behind a honorable legacy and he will be missed by not only his family and friends, but also by the community he served throughout his lifetime.
