Sylvia L. “Syl” Feigenspan, 76, of North Liberty, passed away unexpectedly on June 7th, 2022, while driving with her husband to Oregon to celebrate her grandson Ryan’s graduation.

Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at High Point Church, 4187 Landon Avenue, in rural Iowa City. A Celebration of Sylvia’s Life will begin Tuesday at 1:00 pm at the church. Private family burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville, Iowa.
Memorials may be directed to High Point Church. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is handling arrangements.

Born February 20, 1946 in Postville, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard and Alma (Opsand) Hanson, Sylvia grew up in Elgin, Iowa and graduated from Elgin Valley High School.

She was an accomplished athlete as a member of the 1961 & 1964 Iowa girls state basketball championship teams from Elgin Valley high school. She was a state shot put record holder and Iowa AAU team member in track and field. She was the state of Iowa outstanding track and field athlete for the year 1964. Her love of competition and sports was a highlight of her growing up years as well as her family, community and farm life.

She received her LPN degree from St. Luke’s school of Practical Nursing in Cedar Rapids where she met and later married Marvin “Marv” Feigenspan on June 11, 1966 in Lawton, Oklahoma. Sylvia and Marv were 4 days from celebrating their 56thwedding anniversary.

She began her career at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and worked in other nursing Positions through her life as well.

Over the years, she worked with children in schools in Rolla Missouri and Portland Oregon. She pioneered Living Word Christian Fellowship, now highpoint church, with her husband Marv in 1988 that continues to this day. Her legacy of nonprofit work further expanded as she co-founded and served on the Board of Upscale Ministries of Iowa which has donated thousands of dollars to local and international missions and created a legacy of bringing hope, help, and healing through her countless hours of volunteer work in the Resale store.

She leaves a legacy of music to her family as expressed in personal and congregational worship. As a drummer and singer she was passionate about expressing her love for Jesus with all that she was. Her gift of writing and speaking always was sincere, powerful and impactful without any extra words. Her love of humor always brought an atmosphere of joy as she loved to laugh at her own jokes even if she couldn’t finish telling them. She was interested in following current events and prayer ministry in her love for the world around her. She loved relaxing with NFL football, St Louis Cardinals baseball, Herman joke books, and being with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Those closest to her include her husband Marv;
son, Dan Feigenspan (Tamra) of Kalona daughter, Cheryl Nichols (Rich) of North Liberty and son, Jason Feigenspan (Amy) of Albany, Oregon;
grandchildren, Natalie Casper (Micah), Ty Feigenspan (Kaylee), Danielle, Lauren and Ryan; and great-grandchildren Harper and Brooks.
brothers and sisters, Harold Hanson (LeAnna), Randine Evenson, Paul Hanson, Margaret Suhr (Dale), Inga Hanson, Elsie (Kevin) Walsh, Enoch Hanson (Gina), Albert Hanson (Trudy), Cora Elrod (Gary) and many nieces and nephews.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Paul Hanson, a sister-in-law, Judy Hanson and a brother-in-law, Harley Evenson.
