Deborah Sue Funston was born March 12, 1961, in Washington, Iowa the daughter of Leland Dean and Darlene Mae (Goodwin) Funston. Following graduation from Keota High School in 1979, she attended Kirkwood Community College receiving her Associates Degree. She had worked at a few different jobs before her hiring at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, a job that lasted 36 years prior to her retirement. She married Scott B. Sweeting in Keota on June 7, 1990, and they have lived in Iowa City since before their marriage.

Deb has been described as one very unique, take no bull from anyone, get to the point, strong willed type of lady. She loved her flowers, being an artist, the outdoors where she could bike, hike and zipline in different states. Deb worried about taking care of our planet, rescuing cats, squirrels and any furry creature in need. A tough outer shell concealed a heart of gold willing to do most anything for most anyone!

Her family includes her best friend and husband, Scott; her mother, Darlene Funston; sister, Christina Wagner; and brothers, Clarence Funston and Rory Funston. She was preceded in death by her father, and infant brother, Danny.
