Eldo William Schornhorst, Jr. was born October 14, 1926, to Eldo W. Schornhorst, Sr. and Mildred (Krefft) Schornhorst in Oak Park, Illinois. He was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church in Oak Park.

The family moved to Waverly, Iowa in 1932. He attended Waverly schools and lettered in baseball playing third base. He graduated in 1944 and joined the U. S. Navy flight training program. He was called to active duty in July of 1944 and attended the University of Dubuque and the University of Wisconsin as a member of the Naval Training Program. He was discharged from the Navy in July of 1946. He attended Iowa State College, graduating in 1948 with a degree in Civil Engineering and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve

While at Iowa State, he met Shirley DaMaris Kruse. They were married on September 25, 1948, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Buena Vista County.

Eldo received his license to practice engineering in Iowa in 1952 and was also a licensed Land Surveyor.

He served as Assistant City Engineer in Boone, Iowa and Assistant County Engineer in Clay and Buena Vista Counties in Iowa.
He was County Engineer in Buena Vista and Clay Counties and he also served as District Secondary Road Engineer for the Iowa Highway Commission in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. From 1971 to 1975, he was Vice President of Western Engineering Company in Harlan, Iowa. He completed his career serving as Shelby County Engineer from April 1975 until he retired in July of 1995.

He was active in his church and in many engineering groups. He was a past president of the Iowa County Engineers Association and in 1967, the Governor appointed him to the Iowa State Board of Engineering Examiners, on which he served two terms. He served on many national and state boards and commissions and professional organizations.

He received the Outstanding Iowa County Engineering Achievement Award, the National County Engineering Achievement Award and in 1984, he received the Professional Achievement Citation in Engineering from Iowa State University. In 1998, he received the Excellence in Transportation Award from the Iowa Department of Transportation. He authored many papers and presentations. He was also a licensed pilot.

Eldo died on August 22, 2021, at the age of 94. He is survived by his wife of almost 73 years, Shirley DaMaris (Dee), son Steven (Doris), and daughter Joyce Edfors (Thomas); three grandchildren, Jennifer Winegarden (Mat), Matthew Schornhorst (Beth) and Anna White (Neil); great grandchildren Christopher Winegarden, Mya Winegarden, Isabella Dix, Austin Schornhorst, Elle Schornhorst, Audrey White and Conor White; brother-in-law Wendell (Diane) Kruse and a niece and nephews and other special friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and sister Florene Schornhorst.

Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 27, 2021, at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City where the family will greet guests an hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at 2:00 PM at Harlington Cemetery in Waverly, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to The Arc of SE Iowa, Shelter House, or Zion Lutheran Church.
