David Bruce Bills, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2021, at the age of 67.

David grew up in Sheffield, Pennsylvania, where he enjoyed spending time with his family, playing baseball, walking down the train tracks behind his house, learning guitar, and going to Pittsburgh Pirates games. He pursued higher education after high school, receiving his bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania, followed by earning his MS and PhD at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

After teaching in Chicago and at Cornell College, David began his long career at the University of Iowa in 1985. For over three decades he served in a variety of teaching and administrative roles in the College of Education, where he had a positive influence on thousands of students and colleagues. He traveled extensively across the world, often bringing his family with him, making for important and lasting memories.

David was a man of integrity, humor, intelligence, and compassion. He was also a man of many talents and hobbies, including going on walks, enjoying his extensive vinyl record collection, reading books, lifting weights, rooting for the Pirates and Celtics, enjoying time with his family, and being a crossword puzzle wizard.

Among all his many accomplishments, none were more important to David than his three sons, who survive him: Sam (Kayla), Max, and Isaac. He is also survived by his former wife, Valerie, sisters Becky (Bill) and Kelly (John), brother Scott, an aunt and uncle, and multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Phyllis.

A family memorial will be held, followed by a public gathering and reception from 5:00-7:00 PM on Friday, July 23, at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville, Iowa 52241. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the charity of your choice.
