Mary Ann Bradford, 91, died from Covid-19 on December 30, 2020 at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City, Iowa.

Mary Ann Grebel was born on July 7, 1929, and was the only daughter of Clement L. Grebel and Fern Brokaw Grebel. She was raised in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended St. Louis University where she got a BS and then an MA degree in Speech. She worked as a speech therapist and also taught, until she met her future husband and fellow speech pathologist, Dr. Larry Bradford. Following a whirlwind romance, Mary Ann and Larry were married on Valentine’s Day 1969 in Kansas City and went on to make their home in Topeka, Kansas, where they lived for the next 25 years.

Mary Ann had a lifelong passion for birds, dachshunds and women’s rights. She was an active member of the Kansas League of Women Voters, serving as president of the state chapter. In her later years she enjoyed traveling with her husband to Scandinavia and Italy. 13 years after her husband retired from The Menninger Foundation, they moved to Melrose Meadows in Iowa City to be closer to their daughter Leigh and grandson Cole.

She is survived by her daughter Leigh Bradford; grandson Cole Hotek; former son-in-law Nick Hotek; nieces Deborah Faupel and Sally Anderson; nephews William, Lawrence, and Thomas Grebel; 14 grandnieces and nephews; Larry’s children from a previous marriage, Niels (Gloria) Pearson, Gail Pearson and their children and grandchildren.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Dr. Lawrence James Bradford; her parents Clement L. Grebel and Fern Brokaw Grebel; her dear uncle and aunt A. Sherwood Lee and Hester Brokaw Lee; her beloved brother Dr. Clement Bovard Grebel and nephew Richard Grebel.

Leigh would like to thank the staff of Briarwood Health Care Center for the compassionate care they provided to Mary Ann for the past 3 years. Briarwood went 10 months without a single resident getting Covid-19. Sadly, that changed a few days before they received the vaccine.
