Funeral Services will begin Thursday at 10:30 am at Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin. Interment will be in Oakhill Cemetery in Tiffin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Church in Iowa City or Hoover Elementary in Iowa City. Dory’s family requests that friends please wear casual attire!

Dory was born March 18, 1927 in Johnson County, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Jessie (Sherman) Madden Sr.. She grew up in the Tiffin area in the 1930’s and 1940’s, working in her family’s grocery store – where she cut meat, handled the eggs and tested the cream. She also worked at the town’s telephone office, otherwise known as the Madden family home, where she helped run the switchboard with her brother and parents.

Dory graduated from Tiffin High School and received her teaching credentials from the University of Iowa in 1949. She spent a lifetime (65 years to be exact) sharing her passion as a teacher to elementary school children. During her career, she taught in numerous schools – including 10 years in Sigourney as a physical education teacher. Returning to Iowa City, Dory taught P.E. at Mark Twain, Horace Mann and Robert Lucas elementary schools before transferring to Herbert Hoover and earning her master’s degree in library science. It is there where she helped establish the school’s first library. All in all, she taught for over 55 years in the Iowa City Community School District. Dory continued to return to work each fall until just 3 years ago – when her health forced her to retire at the age of 88. In her more than 60 years of teaching – she missed three days of school. Dory leads the pack as the longest tenured teacher in the school district.

One summer in her early years, she tried out for the Rockford Peaches, a women’s professional baseball team, as their pitcher. Dory enjoyed playing both baseball and softball.

She regularly attended Grace United Methodist Church in Tiffin and First United Methodist Church in Iowa City.

She is survived by her nephew and niece, Jim and Becky Madden of Cedar Rapids; great nieces and nephews, Tiffany, Debbie, Brett and BJ and a host of treasured colleagues and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother and sister in law, Robert and Mary Madden.
