Philip Schoenthaler, 57, of Cedar Rapids, passed away June 6, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. A memorial mass will be held on Friday, August 22, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Maquoketa. Phil was born on November 5, 1956 in Maquoketa, Iowa to George "Stu" and Norma (Cahill) Schoenthaler. He was educated in the Maquoketa schools where he was active in sports, especially football. He graduated with the Class of 1975 of Maquoketa Communtity High School. He continued his education at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, and Kirkwood college in Cedar Rapids. Phil married Debra S. Faas on November 8, 2000 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They shared their lives for 21 years. Phil was a chef and was employed at the Eastern Iowa Airport and Wildwood Smokehouse in Iowa City. He enjoyed music, cooking, camping, reading and time spent with family and friends. And most of all, he enjoyed his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes. He is survived by his wife, Deb, of Cedar Rapids, two daughters, Carrissa of Elk Mound, Wisconsin, and Cassandra (Cody Link) of Menomonie, Wisconsin, Also survived by his mother, Norma Mottet and husband Bob of Maquoketa; a brother, Marty (Kim) Schoenthaler of Decatur, IL, father-in-law, Dairyl Faas of Millersburg, IA, sister-in-law, Elaine Faas (Patti Foltz) of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law, Duane (Sheryl) Faas of Ames, nieces, nephews and cousins. Local survivors include an aunt, Mary Cook, and an uncle, Milo Schoenthaler and an aunt, Marcella Cahill of Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his father, Stu Schoenthaler in 1982; mother-in-law, Edna Faas, niece, grandparents, uncle and two cousins.
