Carol Margaret Macon, 94, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 26, 2018 at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A celebration of her life will be held at 11AM Monday, September 17, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church, Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 9:30 -11 AM at the church. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington, IA.

Carol was born on January 31, 1924 in Monticello, IA, the daughter of Alva and Monica (Arduser) Rodman, the oldest of 4 children. She met her future husband, Robert Macon, during their senior year at Springville High School (she graduated at the age of 16) in 1940. They were married on February 7, 1945 in Lincoln, NE; he left the next day for assignment with the Army Air Corps “flying the Hump” in and out of China in a refitted B-24. They were always partners in life and in business, living and working in Collins, Lime Springs, Bennett, Muscatine, Iowa City, and Fairfield.

After Bob’s death in 1982, Carol returned to Iowa City and worked for several years at ACT while being a full time grandmother, keeping up with her 6 grandchildren, affectionately nicknamed “The Gaggle.” She attended all high school and college graduations as well as weddings of her Gaggle. She was a passionate volunteer, particularly with her church and RSVP, enjoying building friendships with people of all ages and interests. Her Christmas card list was always long as she kept in touch with friends they had made along life’s journey.

Carol is survived by her three children, John Macon of California; Connie (Edward) Brinton of Iowa City; and Jim (Karen) Macon of West Des Moines, IA; sister, Wanda (Bob) Wencl of Colorado Springs, CO; sister-in-law, Mary Rodman of Sioux Falls, SD; a “Gaggle” of 6 grandchildren: Todd (Brenda) Macon of Durango, CO, Jennifer (Todd) James of Colorado Springs, CO, Gretchen (Jeff) Fairfield of Lenox Dale, MA, Nathan (Megan) Silberhorn of Windsor, CO, Christine (Greg) Forsyth of Newton, IA, and Scott (Janet) Macon of Winona, MN. Her Great-GranGaggle includes 13 great-grandchildren,

The family wants to thank the caring staff at UIHC in the Family Medicine department and the Palliative Care Unit. We request that in lieu of flowers, memorials gifts in her honor be made to First Presbyterian Church, Iowa City or Iowa City Hospice.
