9 September 1897 - West Branch Times

Mrs. Matthew Teneick, lovingly known to hundreds all over Johnson county as "Grandma Teneick," passed away Friday morning at the home of her son-in-law, Henry Cowgill, near West Branch.

Old age, more than any particular physical affliction caused her demise. She was an octogenarian, being 81 years of age, and she came to this country in 1839.

Her husband preceded her to the spirit land several years ago, but several sons and daughters, Wm. P., Anson, Fred, and Tunis C. (of California), Hannah and Mrs. Cowgill, live to mourn a noble mother's death.

Her husband built the first house of any moment in Iowa City, and her daughter Hannah is credited with being the first white child born in Iowa City.

The announcement of Grandma Teneick's death will bring sorrow to her friends all over Johnson county. Almost 80 years she has lived hereabouts and her list of friends will include many in every township. Long will she be mourned as a true mother in Israel.--Iowa City Repbulican.

The funeral was held last Sabbath in the Brick Chapel, five miles west of this place where the remains were interred.
