Gideon Jacobs Dies; Rites at Sharon Church

Gideon Jacobs, 86, former resident of Iowa City and the Sharon, Iowa community, died Saturday afternoon at Ellen's Nursing Home where he had been a patient for two days. A retired farmer and carpenter, Mr. Jacobs had made his home here with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Engleman, since they moved here from Iowa City last fall.
Bruces were in charge of the local arrangements. The body was taken to the Beckman Funeral Home at Iowa City Monday noon, where it will remain until shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday, the hour set for the funeral rites at Sharon community church near Iowa City. The Rev. R. Pfaltzgraff, pastor of the church, will officiate, and burial will be in Sharon Cemetery.
Mr. Jacobs is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Engleman of Fort Dodge, Mrs. Fred Gribbell of Tustin, Mich., Mrs. Laurence Hammar of Holt, Mich., and Mrs. Carroll Samuelson of Lansing, Mich.; and two sons, William and Charles Jacobs, both of Iowa City. Eighteen grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Charles Meader of Nisland, S.D., also survive.
His wife, Myrtle; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Jacobs; one daughter, Mrs. Nathan Gribbell; and several brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
Born in the Sharon Community on July 31, 1870, Mr. Jacobs farmed and followed the carpentry trade there for many years. He retired in 1944 and since then had divided his time between his daughters, Mrs. Samuelson in Lansing, and Mrs. Engleman in Iowa City and Fort Dodge, since that time.
Mr. Jacobs had been in failing health for the past three months.
