13 November 1913 - West Branch Times

Mrs. Laura M. Koser had been in poor health for many months and at times became morbid and despondent. On the morning of her death, Friday, Nov. 7th, she had a headache, and after preparing breakfast for her husband as usual, did not eat any herself, and was left along in her home. On her husbands return from the cornfield at noon he found her lifeless body.

A note she left on the table told the cause of her death,--"I am tired of living". There was unmistakable evidence that she came to her death by her own hands, which was corroborated by Dr. L. J. Leech of West Branch and Coroner C. K. Hurd of Iowa City, who were called to view the remains. The drug used was strychnine taken in coffee.

Laura May Smith was born Feb. 28, 1892, in Johnson county, Iowa, and departed this life Nov. 7, 1913. Her girlhood days were spent in Pleasant Valley township. She was united in marriage to Charles W. Koser, April 30, 1912, since which time they have resided at the home where she died. She leaves her husband, her father and mother, Wm. M. Smith and wife, one sister and three brothers.

The funeral took place Sunday morning, Nov. 9, from the home, Rev. Fred L. Ryon of the Friends church of West Branch officiating. The interment was at Iowa City.
