Elizabeth Margaret Scheckel, 89, formerly from the Phoenix area, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at Crestview Specialty Care Center, West Branch, IA. Private family services will be held in Arizona at a later date. Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Phoenix, AZ. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice, whose compassionate care was much appreciated, or Mercy Iowa City Hospital Foundation.

Elizabeth was born on July 14, 1928, in Waucoma, IA, the daughter of Frank and Regina (Meyer) Blong. She received her RN degree from Mercy Hospital and Loras College in Dubuque, IA. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Dr. Gerald J. Scheckel on October 1, 1949, in Waucoma, IA. She was a Red Cross Nurse and retired after 15 years as a school nurse for Cochise Elementary School in Scottsdale, AZ.

Elizabeth (Betty) was a devoted mother and loving wife. No matter how many challenges life brought, she took on each with a positive attitude and always had faith that “things will work out for the best.” Betty had many dear friends and had a natural charm that drew people to her throughout her life. Her strength and optimism were admired by all who had the good fortune to get to know her. She will be deeply missed.

Elizabeth is survived by her four children, Susan Scheckel (Peter Manning) of Stony Brook, NY, Deborah Cobb (Stuart) of Iowa City, IA, Stephen Scheckel (Pam Terrill) of Iowa City, IA, and John Scheckel (Deidre) of Scottsdale, AZ; five grandchildren, Valerie, Bryan, Carolyn, Alan, and Elizabeth; and three great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her brothers, Leo, Ted, Arnold, Joseph and Edward; and her daughter, Mary Langlois.
