5 November 1891 - West Branch Times

ELIJAH JACK departed this life in great peace at 12:30 Sunday morning Oct. 18, 1891, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs Thesbia Tarbox, in Oasis, Iowa.

Father Jack was born in Warren county, Ohio, December 22, 1816. Was married to Margaret Carson, January 13, 1842. Moved to LaPorte county, Ind. where he resided until 1854. He then came west with his family consisting of wife and five children, and settled in Johnson county, Iowa, where he spent remainder of his days.

He was a decided and consistent Christian man, having been received into the United Brethren Church in 1864. And though he was unable, by reason of deafness to hear the word of God preached, he was a constant reader and student of the Bible.

His neighbors, who have known him many years speak of him as above reproach in all business and social relations, a man of pure principles and habits, who sought to impress sentiments of truth and honor upon the youth around him.

The eldest daughter, Sarah J. Eaton, removed to Washington Territory some four years ago, where she still resides and could not be present at the last sad rites. The two sons, John and William, and the other daughters, Mrs. Tarbox and Mrs. Burke, and their families, are well known and esteemed residents of this community. They and all other members of the bereaved circle, may feel assured of the warmest sympathy from all their neighbors in this time of sorrow.

The funeral was largely attended and was conducted by the writer, in the M E Church at Oasis, on Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Oct. 19. The discourse was from the words of John XIV "In my Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you." G.L. GARRISON
