Michael Clark Murphy, 68, of Coralville passed away Monday, May 28, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He died just eight days shy of his 47th wedding anniversary.

The family will greet friends Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 3:30 to 7:30 pm at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 1, 2018 at 10:00 am at Lensing’s Oak Hill location. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa Donor Network, Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center or Heart Transplant Support Group Fund, both at UIHC, or the Iowa City Homeless Shelter.

Mike was born September 22, 1949 in Waterloo, Iowa to William Patrick and Mary Lou (Henry) Murphy. He received his BA in sociology from The University of Northern Iowa. He married Bonnie Lemley on June 5, 1971 in Mason City, Iowa. The couple lived in Des Moines for two years before moving to the Iowa City area in 1974.

Mike worked in Northwestern Bell Marketing for several years, distinguishing himself by making the prestigious President’s Club for top salesmen, many times. Most of his work life, however, was at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the Central Sterilizing Department, where he worked for 28 years. He was involved in many professional organizations, including being the president of the Central Sterilizing Association of Iowa. Mike retired in 2009, having spent his last years as the department manager.

In his spare time Mike could be found on a golf course, making 3 holes in one during his lifetime. He also loved cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Most of his bucket list goals, though, involved traveling. In fact, he made it to all 50 states, and the countries of England, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Turkey.

Mike was deeply involved in making the world a better place. He volunteered at UIHC and Hospice, was a “Big Brother”, and for many years ran the winter overflow program for the Shelter House as the head of the social action committee for his church. He was a supporter of the Children’s Miracle Network, Make a Wish Foundation, and other charitable organizations as well.

Mike will be greatly missed by his wife, Bonnie; daughters, Erin Murphy of Coralville and Meredith (Eric) Jacobson of Ankeny; grandchildren, Benjamin and Allison Jacobson; mother, Mary Lou Carroll of Waterloo; siblings, Cindy (Joe) Feiden of Petersburg, IL, Joanne (Bob) Leavens of Brownsburg, IN and Tim Murphy of Des Moines; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jackie and Todd Tatum of Ankeny; and many nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his father.

Mike’s family would like to extend special thanks to his many care-givers at UIHC, his great Hospice team, and the friends and support network who have laced this sad journey with many blessings.
