Dr. Diane M. Crowley, 65, of Holland, Indiana, formerly of DeWitt, Iowa, died Monday morning, March 7, 2016, of natural causes at Willowdale Village in Dale, Indiana.
Diane was born on December 15, 1950, in Clinton, Iowa, to John R. and M. Audrey (Floerchinger) Crowley. She spent most of her youth in Galena, Illinois, before embarking on a world of adventure after graduating from high school. In pursuit of her love for travel and learning, Diane set out to live all over the U.S. and abroad. She had five children with her first husband, Robert Fischer, (all surviving) during those years. Her oldest son, Jim, of Holland, Indiana, was born in Oklahoma; Adrienne (Chad) Ruiter of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, made her appearance in Kansas; Dr. Liesel Fischer, currently in Baltimore, Maryland, made a grand entrance in Italy; Kendra Fischer of Jasper, Indiana said “hello, world!!” in Germany; and her youngest daughter, Nicole (Cody Spihlmann) Fischer of Holland, Indiana, made a final addition in Louisiana.
Before receiving a Degree in Medicine from the University of Iowa in 1991, Diane studied Zoology and Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii at Monoa. Her hobbies included reading, travel, intellectual conversation, friendly debate, and caring for her patients; It was truly her gift and calling.
Diane is survived by grandchildren: Michael and Daniel Denniger; Cecelia and Suzette Ruiter; Devin Schroy and Sevina Fischer; Ashley Hoppe and Braxton Matthiesen; Coleman, Mason and Alexandra Hardin. She is also survived by three sisters, Dr. Janelle Crowley of Fox River Grove, Illinois, Michaela Havemann of Crystal Lake, Illinois, and Meaghan Crowley-Hunter of Lexington, South Carolina, and two brothers, Craig Crowley of Cedar Rapids and J. Yvo Crowley of Eldridge, Iowa.
Diane was a long time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. On February 15, 1997, she married Max Matthiesen. The couple resided in DeWitt, where Dr. Crowley operated her family practice clinic before relocating to Indiana, where she continued practice medicine. Max preceded Diane in death on March 22, 2015. Her surviving step-children are Alex Matthiesen of Monticello, Iowa and Tina (Joe) Hardin of DeWitt.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 10th with the Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 11th at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
