1913-2005

Korene Ethel Wirtz, 91, or Clinton, formerly of Wellman, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005 in Eagle Point Nursing and Rehab Center in Clinton following a lengthy illness.
A memorial service is Saturday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m. in Powell Funeral Home, Wellman, with the Reverend Rich Pippert officiating. Burial is in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation is from 9 a.m. until time of the service.
Born November 9, 1913 in LaPorte City, she was the daughter of August and Irene (Anton) Stahnke.
She graduated from LaPorte City High School and received a teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. She taught in rural schools in Chester and Webster. She then received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Colorado State College of Education in Greely, Colorado. She taught in Cedar Rapids public school until 1964.
She was untied in marriage to Dr. Robert Wirtz June 10, 1964 in Cedar Rapids. The couple lived in Wellman until Dr. Wirtz's death April 24, 2001. Mrs. Wirtz then moved to Clinton.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting, flower gardening, and traveling. She was a member of the English River Church of the Brethren, Embroidery Club, Garden Club, and Vanguard Club.
Survivors include a step-son, Dr. Larry and wife Carolyn Wirtz of Eugene, Oregon; a step-daughter, Cozette and husband Jim Millice of Wellman; four step-grandchildren; one step-greatgrandchild; a sister, Marlys Smith of Clinton and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Harold Stahnke and two sisters, Cleo Brecher and Edna Glasener.
Memorials may be directed to the English River Church of the Brethren, Clinton Hospice and Eagle Point Nursing and Rehab.
