Walter Dean Winborn was born November 18, 1919 to Mabel Fanny Schwimley and John Thomas Winborn at their farm in Hartsock School District, Sharon Township, Johnson County, Iowa.
Walter attended the one room Hartsock School and graduated from the Sharon Center High School prior to taking agricultural studies at Iowa State University. On June 4, 1939 in Kahoka, Missouri, he married Jeannette Hughes to whom he was married for 63 years until her death in December 2002.
They farmed in Iowa from 1939 to 1945 at which time Walter enlisted in the United States Army. During WWII, he had been a member of "C" Company, 1st Regiment of the Iowa State Guard from 1942-1945. Walter served in the U.S. Army for 23 years retiring at the rank of Sergeant Major in 1968. During his service years Walter was stationed over seas in Germany, Thailand, Panama, and Korea. His family joined him on all of these postings, with the exception of Korea. State-side assignments included time in Massachusetts, Iowa, Colorado, California, and Kansas.
After retirement, Walter began a second career employed at Kemper Military School and College in Boonville, MO from 1968-1985 where he was an instructor in the Junior ROTC Military Department and the rifle team coach. During this time, he and Jeannette owned and operated a Singer Sewing Machine in Boonville where Walter serviced and repaired sewing machines. After selling the store, Walter set up a shope in their garage and continued taking care of sewing machines for his loyal customers.
For thirty five years Walter was an active member of Nelson Memorial United Methodist Church in Boonville, MO. One of the highlights of his life was a mission trip Walter took with the church to South Africa in 1985 prior to the end of apartide. For all of his adult life, Walter was an active member in several Masonic organizations. He was also a member on the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Walter moved to Guardian Angels on the Lake in Elk River, MN in 2003 after the death of his wife to be closer to his oldest daughter, Roxanne Labandz, along with her husband, Fred, and to be near grand and great grandchildren. Walter also has a son Rodney Winborn, of Rolla, MO and a daughter, Rebecca Winborn, of Acton, MA., along with six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He is survived by two sisters and one brother: Alice Thopmson of Ames, Iowa; Ester Handsacker of Colo, Iowa and Russell Winborn of Kalona, Iowa. Through out his life, Walter was always a friend of youth - working with Boy Scouts, Explorer Scouts and church youth groups where ever he lived. Memorials in Walter's memory may be sent to the Sharon Center United Methodist Church to support their summer youth mission trip, 2824 520th St., SW, Kalona, Iowa, 52247.
