Russell LeRoy Winborn was born near Sharon Center in Johnson County Iowa. He was the son of John T. and Mabel (Schwimley) Winborn.
Russell graduated from Sharon Center High School and then attended Westmar College before joining the Army Air Corp during WWII. On November 22, 1942 he was united in marriage to June Niffenegger in the Sharon Center Methodist Church parsonage.
Russell was a farmer who received the Johnson County Outstanding Young Farmer award. He was a specialist in sheep and was a member of the Wool Growers Assoc. He was a member of the Sharon Center United Methodist Church, the Isaac Walton League, served as a director of Liberty Township School and on the Board of the Sharon Mutual Insurance Company. He had many interests during his lifetime that included working with wool products with June, basket weaving, wood working, and fishing and hunting.
Surviving Russell are his children and spouses; Warren and wife Barbara Winborn of Richland, IA, Diane and husband Marshall Mussig of Gladbrook, IA, a daughter-in-law Barbara Winborn, 8 grandchildren listed as casket bearers and 17 great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters; Esther Handsaker of Colo, IA and Alice and husband Harvey Thompson of Ames.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, his wife June (3/28/08), his son Randy and three brothers, Everett, Walt and Milton Winborn.
A memorial in his honor has been established for the Sharon Center United Methodist Church or Pleasantview Home.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the prayers and other offers of sympathy given them at this time of their sudden loss. You will be remembered with love.
