Raymond S. (Hosty) Hochstedler was born in rural Kalona, Johnson County, the son of Sam and Iva L. Miller Hochstedler.
Hosty graduated from Sharon Center High School in 1933. In 1938 he married Muriel Smalley on June 28 at the Unity Church, Iowa City. The same year he founded Hochstedler Service in Frytown and continued in the business until 1990 when he retired and his sons took over. The business was a great place for friends to meet and chat and has remained a landmark in Frytown.
Raymond served as a director of the Sharon Telephone Co. for 27 years and was a 50-year member of Fellowship Masonic Lodge #549. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Iowa City.
Hosty was a friend of many and enjoyed visiting. He also enjoyed dancing and games of cards.
Survivors include three daughters and partners, Ruth and Dave Kelley, Judy and Dan Smith, all of Frytown, Phyllis and her friend, Eric Dethmann, two sons and partners, Gary and Jayne Hochstedler and Randy (Herm) Hochstedler both of Frytown. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jill Kelley, Justin Deitrich, Dustin Smith, Dana Beauchamp, Jeff and Ryan Miller, two great grandchildren, Jace Deitrich, Isabella Beauchamp and one brother and wife, Robert and Mary Hochstedler of Hills.
Preceding 'Hosty' in death were his parents, his wife, Muriel (1970) one son, Dean, three brothers, Omar, Lewis, Monroe and one son-in-law, Jerry Deitrich.
A memorial has been established for the Alzheimer Unit at Parkview Manor.
The family wishes to thank all of Hosty's friends and for their support during his declining years. You will be remembered with love.
