Leigh Wayne Sloan, 60, died Saturday March 10th following a sudden heart attack.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at 10 AM Monday March 19th at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Gary Beckman officiating. Visitation will be Sunday, March 18th from 3 to 6 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where the Knights of Columbus will recite a rosary at 5:30 followed by a Parish Vigil. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer Association in memory of Leigh’s mother.

Leigh was born on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1957, in Marshalltown, the third of five children of Dallas Russell and Irene Marie Plucar Sloan. He was raised in Toledo, where he attended school and was in Little League and Cub Scouts. In 1971 the family moved to Altoona, where Leigh attended Southeast Polk County Schools. He played high school baseball and basketball and graduated in 1975. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa. Leigh was a computer program analyst for the City of Iowa City for nearly 28 years, and worked part time at Walmart for 23 years where he was a CSM.

On March 23, 1979 Leigh met Catherine Marchik on a westbound greyhound bus. It was delayed in Grinnell for 19 hours due to snow. From that time on, Leigh knew Catherine was the one. They married on September 27, 1980 at St. Mary’s Church in Tipton.
Leigh liked to golf, read, and play cards; especially Pepper and Contract Rummy. He enjoyed corn ball movies like National Lampoon and British humor. His favorite movie “It’s A Wonderful Life” always brought a tear to his eye. Most important to Leigh was time spent with family and grandchildren.

Leigh is survived by his loving wife, Catherine and their three children, Anessa (Josh) Jordan of Mesquite, Texas, Dustin Sloan of Mesa, Arizona, and Danalea (David) Blum of Wellman, Iowa; six grandchildren, Delani Blum, Aryana Sloan, Dayleigh Blum, Samuel Jordan, Dakota Blum and Hazel Jordan; his siblings, Kurt (Jean) Sloan of Carlisle, Diana (Steve) Jacobs of Urbandale, Darin (Kelly) Sloan of Savannah, Missouri, and Scott (Michelle) Sloan of Altoona; mother-in-law, Lorna Marchik of Tipton; and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Leigh was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law Robert and his brother-in-law.
