Harold Joseph “Joe” Carpenter, 77, of Iowa City, passed away Monday, January 8th, 2018 at Briarwood Health Care Center surrounded by family.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Monday, January 15th at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 pm on Sunday, January 14th at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Harold was born on December 12th, 1940 in Iowa City, son of Wayne and Evelyn (Petru) Carpenter. In 1959, Harold “Joe” enlisted in the United States Army and served until 1961. On September 14, 1963, Joe married the love of his life, Louise Barnes in Lone Tree, IA.

Joe loved spending time with his family and friends. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him unimaginable joy. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, antique tractors, and cars. He loved taking rides in the ’77 MG Midget he and Louise had.

Joe worked construction in the Iowa City area for most of his life.

Joe was a gentle giant with integrity, honesty, and a fun sense of humor. His strong grip could have you quickly yelling “uncle”. He would build a fire in the wood stove so hot, you would think you were in a sauna.

Joe is survived by his wife Louise and their 2 daughters, Sheila (Marv) Mast of Riverside, IA and Sonja (Matt) Harapat of Iowa City, IA; his grandchildren, Heather (Dave) Mann, Hunter Mast, Natalie Harapat (Brandon Lange), Nate Harapat and Chelsey Kerf; his four great-granddaughters; and his sister, Betty (Gary) Evans. He is also survived by numerous extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and his infant great-grandson.

The family would like to thank the staff at Briarwood for the outstanding care they showed for Joe.
