Robert Harold Gaffey, 93, of Iowa City, died peacefully at his home on Monday, November 20, 2017.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, November 27 at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 26 from 3-6 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Church, Iowa City Hospice or Iowa City Regina Foundation.

Robert was born August 9, 1924 in Holbrook, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Loretta Donohoe Gaffey. He attended country schools and graduated from Parnell High School in 1942.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Anthony. He was a member of the American Legion Post #17 of Iowa City. On June 4, 1951, Robert married Marian Halsch Mann at St. Mary’s Church in Iowa City. She died in 2010.
Robert retired from the U.S. Postal Service Iowa City Post Office after being a rural mail carrier for 30 years. He was a member of the Rural Carriers Association.
Robert enjoyed reading and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his children: Susan Wolf and her children David (Kari), Gregory and Patrick (Heather) Wolf; Michael (Donna) Gaffey and their children Scott (Kayla) and Andrew Gaffey; JoAnn Gaffey; Jayne Brogan and her children Bryan Brogan, Sarah (Matt) Vajgrt and Amanda Brogan; Martin (Mary) Gaffey and their children Robert P. (Jeni) Gaffey, Heather (Matt) Walker, Joseph (Allie) and Hillary Gaffey; Timothy (Mary Ann) Gaffey; James (Sally) Gaffey and their children Kristen, Daniel, Ashley and Joshua Gaffey;

great-grandchildren Tyler, Cody, Lucille and Eliza Wolf, Jordan Shreffler, AedanSkye, Noah, Aiden, Alexis, Avery, Violet and Cecilia Gaffey; Jackson Schindler, Lauren and Kate Walker and Hemi Gould;

siblings John (Helen) Gaffey of Williamsburg, Iowa, Madeline Beran of San Luis Obispo, California, Margery (Richard) Coates of Denver, Colorado and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert was preceded in death by parents; his wife Marian; brothers, Joseph (Laura) and Bernard (Therese) Gaffey; sisters, Geraldine (Gene) Gaffey Ross and Mary Loretta (Harry) Gaffey Wagner; brother-in-law, Harold Beran and sons-in- law Donald Wolf and Paul Brogan.

The family would like to thank Iowa City Hospice for all the care and compassion our father was given during his final days.
