The foot stomping, bluegrass gospel musical "Smoke on the Mountain" opens today in Amana.
The Iowa Theater Artists Company performs the show at The Colony Village Restaurant.
"It is just a terrific, fun musical," said Meg Merckens, co-founder of the company, who plays the role of June, a member of the Sanders Family Singers.
"We thought it was really appropriate for the holidays. Although it is not holiday based, it has lively music, a gathering of people to have a good time."
The show runs through Dec. 14. Tickets are $39.50. Included in the price is a buffet of chicken, ham, oven-baked steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables and salads.
The play by Connie Ray is set in 1938 on a Saturday night in Mount Pleasant, N.C. The Rev. Oglethorpe has invited The Sanders Family Singers to provide an uplifting evening of singing and witnessing for his congregation of 63 - "... 64 when Becca Robinson gets baptized next Sunday."
The Sanders family presents an uplifting evening of singing and storytelling, Merckens said.
Iowa Theater co-founder Tom Johnson agreed.
"It is wonderful gospel music that is hilarious in its presentation," Johnson said.
