Hannah Fountain Murphy Celebrates 89th Birthday

Mrs. Hannah Murphy, an almost lifetime resident of this community, celebrated her 89th birthday on Saturday of this week at the home of her niece, Mrs Walter Horrell, where she has resided for the past year and a half. Despite her advanced age, she ate a hearty dinner of roast duck and chicken, dressing and other good things prepared by Mrs Horrell. The day was made more pleasant and the meal was enjoyed more because of the presence of her son, George Fountain, who visited her and ate dinner with her.

Mrs Murphy was born in Gilford (Sic) county, North Carolina on November 19, 1938. When she was only nine years old, she came with her parents, 5 brothers and 4 sisters, to Iowa. They made the trip in a covered wagon, in company with some other relatives. They settled in Johnson County and she has since resided here. Her parents and all her brothers and sisters have preceded her to the great beyond. She has two sons; George of Lone Tree and Charles of Pleasant Valley, and one cousin and sister-in-law, Mrs Sarah Fountain who is now past 91 years of age. These are the only near relatives who remain.

When a young woman, she was forced to do a great deal of sewing, as in those days all clothing was made at home. Severe eye strain brought about a weakening of the eyes and for the past 15 years she has been totally blind. Regardless of this condition, she remains cheerful and is pleasant. She enjoys company and is a great talker. She is quite hard of hearing but does not use an ear trumpet.

Mrs Murphy is able to sit up a little each day, but for the most part, she remains in bed. She has a remarkable memory and can tell with decision, of events that happened long years ago. The editor of this paper enjoyed a pleasant visit with her last Saturday and is pleased to report her looking well. She enjoys friendly calls and will be pleased to have any of her old time friends call on her at the Walter Horrell home.
