Service Thursday for HARLAN

MT. PLEASANT -- LaVerne W. HARLAN, 73, 102 E. Green, Mt. Pleasant, former Fairfield resident, died at 5:15 a.m. today at University Hospitals, Iowa City (note: in Johnson Co., IA).

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Weir Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev. Ronald Kramer officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fairfield. Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends until 8:30 p.m. Memorials have been established to First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant, and Mt. Pleasant Library.

HARLAN was born Aug. 18, 1912 at Fairfield, the son of Chester and Benna G. WATSON HARLAN. On Oct. 27, 1935 in Fairfield, he married Betty L. JONES, who survives.

Also surviving are a son, David, Overland Park, Kan.; an aunt, Mae PEEBLER, and an uncle, John WATSON, both of Fairfield.

HARLAN worked at J. C. Penney's in Fairfield until 1938, when he was promoted to assistant manager at the Penney's store in Mt. Pleasant. He worked there until 1951, served in the Army in WW II, owned and operated The Newstand in Mt. Pleasant from 1951 to 1958, had been a letter carrier, Records Identification Officer for Mt. Pleasant Police Department and Assistant Police Chief. He retired in 1975.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant, Masonic Lodge No. 8, Mt. Pleasant, past commander of VFW Post 2561 and a member of Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Police Officers.
