STROKE FATAL TO R. W. GAINES

Richard W. GAINES, former resident of Fairfield, passed away shortly after noon today at the St. Francis hospital in Burlington (note: in Des Moines Co., IA). He suffered a stroke at his home in Burlington yesterday morning and never recovered.

The body will be brought to the Monger funeral home here in Fairfield where funeral arrangements will be made.

Born in Fairfield, "Dick" as his many friends knew him, was well known in this community. He was employed at the Tribune Printing company for 22 years before he resigned and accepted a position with the Akers Blackmar Printing company in Burlington in 1942.

Mr. GAINES failed to report to his work in Burlington yesterday morning, employees at the shop went to his home where they found him unconscious. He was rushed to the hospital where his condition remained critical until his death. All hope for his recovery was given up this morning.

GAINES RITES HERE FRIDAY

Funeral services for Richard W. GAINES, former well known resident of Fairfield, will be held Friday at the Presbyterian church at 2:00 p.m. Dr. C. R. Douglass and Dr. C. V. Broun will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Mr. GAINES died shortly after noon yesterday at the St. Francis hospital in Burlington where he ws taken following a stroke suffered at his home Tuesday morning.

He was born June 19, 1898, in Fairfield, the son of Fred and Ella GAINES. He was reared in Fairfield, graduated from the local high school and attended Parsons college. He was employed at the Tribune Printing company for 22 years before accepting a position with the Akers Blackmar Printing company in Burlington five years go (sic). He was still employed at the firm when he died.

Mr. GAINES was married to Lorene JONES who preceded him in death May 27, 1945. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and the Elks lodge.

He is survived by a daughter, Shirlene, student at the University of Iowa, his mother, Mrs. Fred GAINES, a sister, Mrs. John WARD, and a brother, Floyd GAINES, all of Fairfield. His father preceded him in death.

The body will lie in state at the Presbyterian chruch Friday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Services will be in charge of the Monger funeral home.
