Louis E. GAINES, Local Merchant, Taken In Death

Louis E. GAINES, 50, Fairfield businessman, died at 10 a.m. today at his home at 305 S. Court St. He had been ill for several months, undergoing surgery at Rochester, Minn., last summer.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The body is at the Weston Behner Funeral Home.

A lifetime resident of Fairfield, GAINES was owner of Louie's Trading Post on the east side of the square. He was born Sept. 21, 1910, the son of Louis O. and Stella HUYETT GAINES. His late father was a pioneer Fairfield industrialist, serving as president of the Dexter company from 1911 to 1948.

GAINES was married to Refa Marie TEAL Oct. 21, 1955 at Dallas, Texas. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Janyce BEAL, Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. Barbara CLAUSER, Ferndale, Mich. Also surviving are four grandchildren and one brother, Huyett GAINES, Anaheim, Caif.

GAINES was active in the theater business here for a number of years. He operated the Coed and Rex theaters until 1942 when they were sold to Theater Enterprises, Inc.

Mr. and Mrs. GAINES entered the sporting goods business in Fairfield in 1957. They operated Louie's Sport Shop on the west side of the square until 1958 when they enlarged the business and moved to the present location.

GAINES was a member of the Fairfield Elks and Eagles lodges.

Louis E. GAINES Rites Saturday

Services for Louis E. GAINES, local businessman, will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Weston Behner Funeral Home.

GAINES, 50, died Wednesday at his home at 305 S. Court street after an illness of several months. He was owner of Louie's Trading Post.

Services will be conducted by Dr. C. R. Douglass. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Notice Is Hereby Given, That the undersigned has been duly appointed and qualified as Executrix of the estate of Louis E. GAINES deceased, late of Jefferson County. All persons indebted to said estate are requested to make immediate payment; and those having claims against the same will present them within legal time, duly authenticated, to the undersigned, for allowance and file in the office of the Clerk of the District Court.

Note: Buried in Lot 4th.009. Second wife Refa subsequently remarried, to Elmer BURCH, died in 2001 and was buried with Louis. Louis' first wife Eleanor M. GRIFFITH remarried twice, died in 2005 with the last name of THRANE, and was buried in Omaha, NE. Louis' middle name can be found on his death certificate as Edwin; however, a researcher who submitted a Family Group Sheet to the Fairfield Library noted his middle name as Edmund.
