Died in Fairfield, on the 30th of November, Mr. Eliphalet B. FITCH, in the 27th year of his age, of congestive fever.

This estimable young man emigrated to the west sometime last spring, and, after exploring the territory to some extent, finally selected as his location the flourishing village of Fairfield. His prospects for long life and prosperity were as good as any of those by whom he was surrounded. Alas! Not soon were those prospects blighted. All his worthy enterprises and worldly anticipations are now speedily wound to a close. Let each of us enquire. Why was it not I?

He was emphatically one of those young man who was everything that he professed to be, plain and unsophisticated in his manners, industrious and constant in business, of unimpeachable morals; in short, one of “Gods noblest works, an honest man.” To know him was to be his friend. To be thus deprived of him, our county has lost a valuable citizen and out town an interesting member of society, whose loss will not be soon forgotten.

Admin. note: Per his probate record, he is believed to be buried in Old Fairfield City Cemetery. There was no stone found for him when the cemetery was read in the 1960s or 1970s. He would have been one of the earliest interments, as the cemetery opened in 1839.
