Colonel Elroy Austin, 81, member of The Daily News’ Quarter Century club, died Friday shortly after 5 p.m. at the Skiff Memorial hospital.
Mr. Austin, ill with pneumonia, had to undergo an operation Thursday at the hospital.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. from the Murdoch funeral home by the Rev Daniel E. Buser, pastor of the Foursquare Gospel church. Interment will be in the Newton Union cemetery.
Mr Austin was born in New York state Sept. 11, 1854, and had been making his home in this vicinity with his daughter, Mrs. Oscar Stockton, since 1914. He came here from Osceola, Ia.
Mr. Austin, a retired farmer served as janitor for the News Printing company a number of years ago.
Surviving relatives are three daughters, Mrs. Martha Stockton, Newton, Mrs. Mary Dunn, Omaha, and Mrs. Cora Edgington, Osceola; and one son, George W. Austin, Wichita, Kan.; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
