Anita Darlene Brouwer
August 2, 1928 - June 24, 2022

Anita Darlene Brouwer, the daughter of John and Marjorie (Jennings) Colyn, was born on August 2, 1928, on a farm west of Monroe, IA. She attended Country School through 8th grade and graduated from Monroe High School with the class of 1945. As a senior, Darlene was the first homecoming queen of Monroe. After high school, she worked for a local photographer in Prairie City, IA, and later in Des Moines, IA at a Motorola television distributor as a receptionist and switchboard operator. Darlene was united in marriage with Allan E. Brouwer of Monroe, IA at her parent's home in Prairie City on February 5, 1954. They started their life together on a farm east of Prairie City and that was their home for the next 31 years. In 1985, Allan retired from farming and they moved to Prairie City. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church of Prairie City. She enjoyed a simple life but a rewarding one for her. Her family was special to her and she loved them all dearly. She enjoyed the outdoors and had a special interest in animals. As a child, she spent many happy times on her pony, Pansie. She especially loved dogs. If one found their way to her door, they found a home. There was a long list of them and not one did she forget.

Darlene passed peacefully at home surrounded by her family at the age of 93 on Friday, June 24, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and brothers and sisters-in-law Paul (Gladys) Colyn and Robert (Irene) Colyn.

Darlene is survived by her sons, Bryan (Debra) Brouwer of Prairie City, IA, and Larry (Carol) Brouwer of Houston, Texas, brother-in-law Wilfred "Bill" (LaVonne) Brouwer of Melbourne, Florida and sister-in-law Lois Brouwer of Van Buren, Arkansas. Five grandchildren, April Vestweber of Prairie City, IA, Mathew Papiani of Pleasant Hill, IA, Lisa (Harry) Brannen of Prairie City, IA, Ann (Ryan) Van Der Kamp of Prairie City, IA, and Michael Brouwer of Shawnee, Kansas. Nieces, Patricia (Larry) Plate of Pella, IA, and Jeannie (Darrell) Lester of Newton, IA as well as seven great-grandchildren.
