Vickie Jane (Coomer) Lundberg

Vickie Jane Lundberg, 68, of Newton died on Friday, May 06, 2022, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory, with a lunch to follow. Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m., Monday, May 16, at the funeral home. Memorials in Vickie’s name (checks made payable to Brett Lundberg) may be left at the funeral home.

Vickie, the daughter of Kermit and Mildred (Franklin) Coomer, was born the youngest of three girls on August 11, 1953, in Grinnell, joining her older sisters, Connie and Patricia. She was raised in Kellogg where she and her sisters were referred to as the “Sisters of Saint Kellogg.” At the age of 10, her daddy, Kermit, died suddenly. Her mother, Millie, later remarried and not only did Vickie gain a loving dad in Lyle Blum, but also two more siblings, Terry and Mary. The family moved to Newton and Vickie graduated from Newton High School in the class of 1971.

On January 19, 1974, Vickie was united in marriage with Al Lundberg in Newton. Like the Eric Church song says, “mama had a soft spot for a hell raisin' boy and she had two more just like him”. Vickie and Al were blessed with two sons, Brian Matthew in 1977 and Brett Michael in 1981. With self-admitted OCD, not only do the boys initials match but their first and middle names had to have the exact same number of letters. As the boys grew up, Vickie was very involved with their activities; going to games, concerts, and supporting each and every one of their interests. By nature, Vickie was a caretaker. While the boys were young and again later on Vickie ran an in-home daycare. She loved taking care of the children that passed through her door and always held a special place for them in her heart as they continued to grow up. Through the years, Vickie had also worked at Maid-Rite, the Hy-Vee Deli, and on July 26, 2019, retired from Wylie Eye Care in Des Moines.

She was also a devoted care taker to her mother, Millie, as she aged. They would go on quite the adventures together. The best times were had when the three Coomer girls would get together, either in Florida where Connie and Patricia live or back in Iowa when they would come to visit. Millie and her girls were always up to something and giggling along the way. By far, Vickie’s favorite role was that of Grammy. She was a loving grandma that would do anything for her grandchildren. If there was a new movie out or a toy that was longed for you could count on Vickie to be asking for her babies so they could have a weekend away from mom and dad and go to the theatre or Wal-Mart.

For just short of 20 years, Vickie and her significant other, Keith Beal, have enjoyed life together. They would travel, go to Prairie Meadows, and out to eat. Vickie also enjoyed decorating graves and going on shopping trips. Keith doted on her and was by her side for those excursions too, even though he would jokingly try to get out of them. Vickie was known to keep a meticulous house and couldn’t possibly sit to watch a show without having to get up to clean or do something. She was always taking care of everything around her.

Vickie’s care and compassion for others will continue on in her family including her significant other, Keith Beal of Newton; sons, Brian (Sirena) Lundberg and Brett (Chantelle) Lundberg, both of Newton; Keith’s children , Leslie (Scott) Christiansen of Plano, Texas and Brian (Wendy) Beal of Urbandale; her grandchildren, Noele Lundberg, Dylann Beiner, Derek Beiner, Chase Lundberg, Dakota Dawson, Zayne Beal, Aiden Christiansen and Camden Christiansen; siblings, Terry (Joy) Blum of Tabernash, Colorado, Connie Dengler of Tampa, Florida, Patricia McPherren (Steve Schoenfeld) of Boynton Beach, Florida, and Mary (Joel) Rich of Omaha, Nebraska; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Kermit Coomer and Lyle and Mildred Blum; brother-in-law, Bill Dengler; and nephew, Seth Rich.
