Burial will be at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.

Mildred M. Mencke Swalwell, the daughter of William and Lillian Achtemeier Mencke was born on August 9, 1924 in Newton, Iowa. She graduated from Newton High School in 1942.

On January 17, 1946, Mildred was united in marriage with George H. Swalwell at the Zoar Church in rural Newton. They were blessed with two daughters, Linda and Loretta. Mildred had been a country schoolteacher and was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Newton and the Jasper County Farm Bureau. Mildred was a kind and gentle soul who loved to travel, cook, collect recipes, garden and chat; but her greatest love of all was her family.

Mildred died on Sunday, November 22, 2020, at Newton Village Health Care Center in Newton. She was 96. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, George in 1987; and son-in-law, Richard “Duke” Wohlgamuth in 2018.

Those left to cherish Mildred’s memory are her daughters, Linda (Danny) Stover of Reynoldsburg, Ohio and Loretta “Lori” Wohlgamuth of Andrew, Iowa; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews.
