Penny was born on July 17, 1941 in Newton, Iowa to Francis and Martha Failor. As a little girl, she adopted a pair of baby chicks that she doted on by grinding corn feed in a coffee grinder for them but her most prized baby chick was the one that let her dress him up in doll clothes and hold him in her arms. She loved exploring the northern woods and the lakes where she’d go fishing with her father and sisters. She graduated in 1959 from Newton Senior High School, then received her R.N. degree from The Swedish Hospital School of Nursing, and afterwards traveled the world and worked as a nurse assisting adults and then caring for newborns in Intensive Care. She met her husband Clayton Benedict Ries (Clay) of Esmond, South Dakota on a blind date set up by mutual friends and they married 6 months later on December 1969 in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. A year later they welcomed their only child, Joseph Benedict Francis (Joe) in Grand Forks, North Dakota and afterwards moved to International Falls, Minnesota. Penny was later a resident of San Angelo and El Paso, Texas, and more recently of San Tan Valley and Gilbert, Arizona.
Penny enjoyed traveling, collecting angels, bible study, church activities, and for many years worked with charitable organizations collecting, wrapping and delivering Christmas gifts for orphans in Mexico. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Clay, her son Joe and daughter-in-law Anita (nee
