Funeral services for Joe Gilson, 83, were held Tuesday at the Boyd funeral home at Baxter. Rev. Andy James, pastor of the Rhodes M. P. church, in charge. Burial in the Baxter cemetery. Pall bearers were Ole Wilson, Oscar Cunningham, Carl Webb, Chas. Goake, Fred Connelly and Simon Stock.
Joseph Gilson was born at Titusville, Penn., Dec. 30, 1859, and died at his home at Rhodes after a long illness, July 29, 1934. He came to Decorah, Ia., in 1854 and to Jasper county in youth where he lived many years. Later he was at Laurel and the past year he lived at Rhodes.
He was married Aug. 1878 to Mary Hayes of Clyde. Five children were born to this union. The mother died in 1889. Oct. 6, 1897, he was united in marriage to Mary Marsfield Parker of Collins, who survives.
He was a member of the Yoman lodge and Three Quarter Century club of Jasper county. Besides his widow, four children, Charles of of Folson, Minn., Leslie of Marshalltown, Mrs. Blanche Seager of Grants Pass, Oregon, Mrs. Leota Van Gilder of Des Moines and four stepchildren, Carl Parker of Racine, Wis., Ralph Parker of Newton, Guy Parker of Laurel and Mrs. Addie Callahan of Rhodes, and grandchildren, great grandchildren and other relatives survive.
