Mary Andrews Wood was born in Indiana on May 17, 1836. She was married to Geo. B. Wood in Erie, Pa., on the 16th of December 1856. To this union were born five children. Three of her children have preceded Mother Wood into the better land. Two died in infancy and the third, Mrs. Retta Wood Hays, passed away December 2, 1908. There are left to mourn the passing of a good mother, two children, Mr. E. F. Wood of Colfax, and Mrs. Nettie Wood French of Los Angeles, Cal.
Mrs. Wood moved to Iowa from Illinois in 1863 in the fall of that year. She has resided here at Colfax ever since that time. When she moved here there was no town of Colfax, as we know it; and it can truly be said that in her going this community loses one of its real pioneers. Mrs. Wood was a faithful mother, a good neighbor, and a kind woman. Of her it can be said that she “has come to her grave in a full age like as a shock of corn cometh in, in its season.”
She died at her home in Colfax on November 29, 1917, aged 81 years, 6 months and 12 days. The funeral services were conducted from her home by the Rev. E. G. Williams on Saturday afternoon, December 1, 1917. Interment in Oak Hill.
