Death of Wm. Howard
From the Monroe Record we copy the following, relative to the death of Mr. Howard:
On Thursday morning the tolling of the bell announced the death of one of our best known and most prominent citizens, Wm. Howard, Esq., who passed away at 11 o’clock of the previous evening.
We have endeavored, unsuccessfully to obtain such biographical facts in relation to the career of the deceased as would be of interest to the public; and therefore only say that as a lawyer, a business man, and a public spirited citizen, he has occupied a place which can not be easily filled. He was yet in the prime of life, although the honored parent of grown-up children; few anticipated such a result at the beginning of his final illness; yet, after receiving the best of medical aid, he gradually sank into the arms of death. His bereaved family have the sympathies of all who know them.
P. S. – Since writing the above we have learned from Mr. Chancey Howard, senior, brother to the deceased, that William Howard was born in Herkimer county, New York, November 10th, 1822, and consequently was in his 48th year at the time of his death. His mind matured early. He was married at 18 years of age. At the age of 21 he became Sheriff of his native county, and continued in that position for twelve consecutive years, and he has acted in various public capacities ever since. He settled in the town of Monroe in the year 1855, and held here the office of Justice of the Peace for seven years, displaying excellent executive and judicial ability.
For the last four years he has been a successful practitioner of law in this county.
