Shelly (Fleener) Van De Krol, 61, of Lynnville, died Friday, Mar. 3, 2017, at her home. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Mar. 9, at Lynnville Friends Church. The family will greet friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Mar. 8, at the church. Memorials in Shelly’s name may be left at the church or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.
Shelly, the daughter of Lyle Fleener and Lola Brummond, was born April 16, 1955, in Grinnell. She grew up in Lynnville and went to Lynnville-Sully Schools. Shelly taught preschool at Small World Preschool in Sully. She was united in marriage with Howard “Howie” Hobbs, Jr. on Nov. 26, 1994, in Lynnville. She then worked at Pella Corp and later at the Diamond Trail Children’s Center. Following Howie’s death, Shelly was united in marriage with Lynn Van De Krol in May 2006 in Lynnville. Shelly loved animals, especially cats, and she used that love to do pet sitting. She was a past founding member of the Grace Community Church in Grinnell, and a current member of the NRA and the Poweshiek County Sportsman Association, where she enjoyed target shooting. Shelly was talented at writing poems and making fairy gardens. She also loved to sit outside and watch animals and nature.
Those left to honor Shelly’s memory are her husband, Lynn Van De Krol of Lynnville; son, Nate Westercamp of Lynnville, son of Shelly’s first husband, Ron Westercamp; stepchildren, Donnie Van De Krol of Grinnell, Renee (James) Jennings of Montezuma, and Craig Van De Krol of Altoona; four stepgrandchildren, Jesemmy, Macie, Ezzra, and Jacob; her sisters, Ricki Lanser of Pella and Rita (Dave) Carlson of Lynnville; her sister-friend, Cindy Norman of Sully; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lyle Flenner; mother and stepfather, Duane and Lola Braack; husband, Howie Hobbs in 2004; daughter, Darcy in infancy; half-brother, Larry Flenner; and brother-in-law, Bob Lanser.
