October 21, 1934 ~ December 6, 2017 (age 83)

Darwin G. Springer, 83, of Newton died on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at Park Centre. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Monday, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church or the Jasper County Historical Museum may be left at the funeral home or the church the morning of the service.

Darwin, the son of Earl B. and Lula (Beck) Springer, was born on October 21, 1934 in Guthrie Center, Iowa. In 1951, he moved to Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1952. Darwin began his 41-year career at the Maytag Company in 1953 where he was a part of the Millwright Apprenticeship program and then worked as a Machine Repairman. From January 21, 1954 until January 20, 1956, Darwin served his country in the U.S. Army. On June 28, 1957, Darwin was united in marriage with Cathleen Work at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. In 1994, he retired from Maytag. Darwin was a member of the UAW Local 997 and attended the First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed blacksmithing, puzzle and brain games, woodworking, reading, and anything mechanical. Darwin was very quick witted and a history buff. He also was known for enjoying a good bowl of popcorn and a western.

Those left to honor Darwin’s memory are his wife, Cathleen Springer of Newton; daughter, Deb (Ted) Van Drimmelen of Newton; his grandchildren, Jessica (Bill) Iverson, Ross (Chassi) Van Drimmelen, Colin (Amy) Van Drimmelen, Rachael (Sean) McDermott, Brice (Tiffany) Van Drimmelen, and Jake Springer (Taylor Graff); great-grandchildren, Tayler, Aliza, Nora, Jayden, Dean, Hagen, Cole, Carlee, Sofia, McKynna, and Kinser; and his two nephews, Larry (Marcia) DeHaan of Elgin, Illinois and Bob (Denise) DeHaan of Lexington, Kansas and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Daniel Lee Springer, granddaughter, Aliza Ann Springer; sister, Betty (John) DeHaan; and brother-in-law, Fredrick Work. ~ The Wallace Family Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa Wed 06 Dec 2017.
