Darlene P. Litterer, 91, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 13, 2022, at Clover Ridge Place in Maquoketa.

A private family service and burial will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport, Iowa. There is no public visitation. The Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family.

Darlene Phyllis Schwarz was born on June 27, 1930 in Scott County, Iowa, to William and Edna (Olson) Schwarz. She was a Maquoketa High School graduate and later earned her LPN through Clinton Community College. She had worked as an LPN at Crestridge Nursing Home in Maquoketa and retired from the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa.

Darlene was married before and to that union nine children were born. She married Kenneth Litterer in Long Grove, Iowa. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, playing cards, and attending grandchildren’s activities.

Those left to honor her memory include her children, Kathy (Don) Bales of Sabula, IA, Sheryl (Dennis) O’Brien Springville, IA, Bob (Kathy) Bauer of Preston, IA, Julia (Bob) Bruns of Iowa City, IA, Wendy (Craig) Winegar of Maquoketa, IA, Carolyn (Danny) Clark of Maquoketa, IA, Arlen (Vonda) Bauer of Mack, CO, Luann Ehrler of Maquoketa, IA, and Colleen (Roland) Zschiegner of Tipton, IA; step-children, Mike Litterer of Ft. Madison, IA, Jennie DuPont of Balmerton, Ontario, Canada, Theiann (Art) Scherby of Kakabeka Falls, Ontario, Canada, and Jay (Jill) Litterer of Bettendorf, IA; a brother Dale (Judy) Schwarz of McClausland, IA; many grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth on November 15, 2020, brothers LaVerne, Don and Vernon Schwarz, a sister Joyce Schwarz, and a grandson Nathan Bruns.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Jackson County Historical Society, Hospice of Jackson County, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
