Philip Jude Marzen, 54, of Maquoketa, IA, left his earthy body for a new life in heaven on Friday, July 9, 2021.

Phil was born on September 7, 1966, in Charles City, IA, the son of Kenneth and Rose (Naumann) Marzen. Phil was a twin to his brother, Patrick. He was raised in Nashua, IA and was a 1985 graduate of Charles City High School. As a youngster, he loved to play with Hot Wheels and had a talent for imitating emergency vehicle sounds. With ten brothers and sisters, there was never a shortage of playmates. Following high school, Phil attended Loras College where he went on to earn his BA in history.

While in college, Phil started working for Theisen’s Farm-Home-Auto in Dubuque. In his 32 years, he advanced from working in the lumber yard to store manager; first in Charles City and then Maquoketa. His expectation of both himself and his associates was to exemplify good customer service, echoing Theisen’s belief that, “People buy from people, not companies.”

Phil enjoyed theatre and traveling. He brought characters to life on stage when running the light and sound boards at the Grand Opera House in Dubuque. When management duties took away some of his free time, he attended theatre productions at the Bell Tower Theatre. Phil took trips to Las Vegas and Disney World, as well as traveled through the Midwest; most recently to the Black Hills in September 2020.

Phil loved meeting for the day, grabbing lunch, having a good conversation, and browsing through antique malls and little shops. Lots of laughter and fun joking around was guaranteed when spending time with him. He also enjoyed board and card games, even if he had to cheat a bit to win!

In 2013, a little wire-haired, mixed-breed dog, named Molly, stole Phil’s heart, and became a spoiled companion. Molly will now join Karen (a close friend of Phil’s) and her family, whom Molly already loves.

Survivors include three brothers: Greg of Durham, NC, Dan (Jeri) of Bondurant, IA, Doug of Iowa City, IA. Three sisters: Carmel Hall of Stanton, KY, Connie (Pat) Tapp of Nashua, IA, and Kathy (Tim) Beckler of Tipton, IA. One sister-in-law, Susan Marzen of North Liberty, IA. Phil is also survived by several nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, four siblings: Dianne, Rebecca, Patrick, and Dean. Also by three in-laws: Kim Marzen, Myron (Pete) Hall, and Leo Schultz.

“Please keep everything light and festive. I had a great life and wonderful friends and family.
I couldn’t have been luckier! Love you all.”-Phil.

A celebration of Phil’s life will be at 3:00 pm on Saturday, July 24 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Family will have a greeting prior to the celebration at the funeral home from 1 – 3:00 pm. Inurnment will be at a later date at Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Dyersville, IA. Memorial contributions may be directed to The Philip Marzen Memorial Fund in care of Connie Tapp.

The family wishes to acknowledge the special friends who loved Phil as their brother: Allison, Anita, George, Karen, and Tim. A special thank you to all the friends and associates that Phil has worked with through the years.
