BELLEVUE, Iowa - John E. Rieckens, 81, of Bellevue, died Monday afternoon, Aug. 15, 2005, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Bellevue, with the Rev. Paul Gammelin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Bellevue, Post 273. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. today at the church. The Kingery Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bellevue, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rieckens worked for 28 years as a lockman with the United States Government Lock and Dam No. 12, after serving his country during World War II in the Navy.

He was born on Sept. 23, 1923, in St. Donatus, son of John H. and Hildegarde (Mohlenhoff) Rieckens. He married Wilhelmena Kuper on Sept. 22, 1947, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Bellevue.

He was a member of St. John's Church, the Bellevue American Legion and the Midwest Threshers.

He enjoyed restoring antique tractors.

Surviving are his wife, Wilhelmena; a daughter, Kathy (Ron) Johnson, of Bellevue; a son, Thomas (Lila) Rieckens, of Bellevue; six grandchildren, Scott Rieckens, David Carter, Steven Carter, Penny Carter, Gordon Johnson and Sara Johnson; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Isaac Carter; two brothers, Richard (Virginia) Rieckens, of Bradenton, Fla., and William (Madonna) Rieckens, of Bellevue; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Susan and Sue Ann, and a son, David.
