Mary I. Platner Schnell Leget, 80, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 26, 2017.

A celebration of Mary's life will be held on Friday, November 10, 2017 from 2 to 4 P.M. at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa, Iowa. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Mary Irene Platner was born on May 15, 1937 in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, to Glenn and Marie (Stoneking) Platner. She grew up on a farm in Marion, Iowa and was a 1955 graduate of Marion High School. She married Russell E. "Gene" Leget in 1974 in Galena, Illinois. He preceded her in death on October 4, 1998.

Mary had worked as a bookkeeper at Penrose Hardware Store and more recently at Stickley Electric in Maquoketa for many years.

Mary enjoyed gardening, canning, listening to music, and being with nature. She especially cherished time with her family and friends. Mary's fun-loving spirit and kindness will be greatly missed.

Those left to honor Mary's memory include her children, Rogene Ann Schnell of Vadnais Heights, MN, and Craig Allen (DiAnna) Schnell of Excelsior Springs, MO; a brother Allen Platner of Marion, IA; a sister Glenna Whitmarsh of TX; 2 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 1 step-great-grandchild; and best friend, John Stockel of Lancaster, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Russell E. "Gene" Leget, a son William "Bill" Schnell, sisters Pauline and Harriet, and infant brother Glenn Wayne.
