Evelyn L. Fagerland, 86, of Maquoketa, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2017, from complications of Lewy Body Dementia.

A celebration of Evelyn's life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, October 11, 2017, from First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa with Pastor Judy Heinrich officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, from the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.

Evelyn was born to Martin and Alma (Jansen) Hoffman on December 16, 1930, in Clinton, Iowa. She grew up on a farm near Camanche, Iowa, attended rural schools and graduated from Clinton High School in 1948. She worked at Excelsior Laundry and Dry Cleaners in Clinton for a short time. She was then joined in marriage to John Fagerland on September 17, 1950 in Elvira, Iowa. Three daughters were born to the marriage, Karen, Kendra and Krista. John preceded her in death on April 10, 2006.

Evelyn was a member of First Lutheran Church. She was always very active as a volunteer, serving in her church throughout the years as a Sunday school teacher, choir director, and was active in the women's groups. When her girls were young she was also a 4-H leader, Girl Scout leader and active in band boosters. Her more recent community interests included serving as president for the Jackson County Public Hospital Auxiliary, Maquoketa Woman's Club, and the Jackson County Historical Society to which she was very devoted. Evelyn was a strong support to her husband, John, in his banking career.

Evelyn was most happy when she was having fun with her girls and grandchildren and she loved decorating the entire house for Christmas each year. She also enjoyed sewing, antiques, genealogy and she and her husband traveled extensively and also hosted 5 foreign exchange students over the years, several of which were relatives from Norway.

She is survived by her daughters Karen (Terry) Slattery, Kendra (Mark) Beck, both of Maquoketa; 5 grandchildren, Jodi (Anthony) Capicchioni of Morton Grove, IL, Brian (Brandi) Slattery of North Liberty, IA, Brandon (Jill) Beck of Bellevue, IA, Bjorn (Nikki) Beck of Maquoketa and Marta Grant of Preston; 8 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Arlene Hansen of Clinton, IA. Her parents, husband, daughter Krista Grant and grandson Andreas Grant preceded her in death.

The family would like to thank Pastor Judy Heinrich, Hospice of Jackson County, the staff of Clover Ridge Place and Crestridge Nursing Home for their care and support.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Hospice of Jackson County, the Jackson County Historical Society or the charity of your choice.
